Canadian Mill Services Association provides Grade Stamping services and Grader Training services for 2 categories of members and 2 categories of non-members.
To possess CMSA grade stamps at your facility, you must be a member of CMSA and pay a monthly membership fee.
For individuals that own small portable sawmills or for people that purchase non-grade stamped lumber from a lumber yard or portable sawmill and need the lumber grade stamped so that it can be used structurally in a building or house.
CMSA is able to come to your site or residence to grade and grade stamp the lumber. We must be able to see all four sides and both ends of each piece of lumber that you need graded and grade stamped. So contact us first, and before you use the lumber in a building or house. According to the Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board, Grade Agencies cannot grade stamp lumber that is already in place in a house or building.
The fee for this type of work is based on the travel time, time on site to grade and grade stamp the lumber, and expenses including travel, meals, grade stamp, and if necessary, a hotel.
For individuals or business renovating, their Structural Engineer may request our opinion on the grade of a piece(s) of lumber in a structure. In this case, all we can do is give you our opinion of grade based on what we can see and grade visually. We cannot grade stamp lumber secured in a structure. We can only give an opinion of grade based on the number of edges and ends visible.
The fee for this type of work is based on the travel time, time on site to observe the lumber, and expenses including travel, meals and if necessary, a hotel.
Training programs (Education) for members and non-members is covered on a separate page of our website.
CMSA can come to your facility or location and put on a Custom Training program.
Examples would be a Lumber Grading course, Product Knowledge course, Tallying course, Supervision and Safety course, Log Breakdown course, Timber Grader training etc.
The basic cost of a custom developed course would depend on if you are a CMSA member or a non-member; the Fee-for-Service rate is $ 68.75 per hour (+ GST) for members and $81.25 per hour (+GST) for non-members
A quotation will include CMSA Staff preparation, development and delivery time, training manuals and/or grading books as required, time for collecting lumber samples where necessary, and expenses including travel costs, meals, and if necessary, a hotel.
